Mike Fremont, a Florida-based 102-year-old, is defying age and expectations. He holds multiple world records, including the fastest marathon ever run by a 91-year-old. But his story is more than medals and miles — it’s about fighting cancer, transforming his health with a plant-based diet, and living life with purpose and strength.
Beating Cancer and Choosing Life
When Mike was 69 years old, he was diagnosed with cancer. Doctors gave him just three months to live. But instead of giving up, Mike made a bold decision — he said “no” to giving in and completely changed his lifestyle.
He read the Cancer Prevention Diet and switched to a plant-based, vegan lifestyle. Within 2.5 years, his doctors were amazed — no cancer had spread (no metastases) in his body. Mike believes this change was the turning point in his life.
Mike’s Vegan Diet
Mike credits his simple and healthy meals for his long, active life. His daily diet includes:
- Breakfast: Oatmeal with syrup and blueberries
- Lunch: Beans
- Dinner: Steamed broccoli flowers topped with ketchup
He avoids processed foods and sticks to whole, clean, plant-based ingredients. This diet has not only helped him fight disease but also manage conditions like arthritis, which he says he cured through nutrition.
Staying Fit at 102
Even at this age, Mike keeps a strong workout routine. According to fitness coach Dan Go, Mike’s current fitness program includes:
- Running 5 miles, three times a week
- Canoeing, three times a week (when the weather is warm)
- Push-ups and pull-ups, to keep his upper body strong
Earlier, Mike used to run 10 miles three times a week, showing that he has stayed active for decades.
The Power of a Calm Mind
Mike also believes in living a low-stress life. As Dan Go explains, stress kills, and Mike knows that. He maintains a peaceful mindset, which helps protect him from stress-related health problems. Studies show that stress is linked to a higher risk of early death, so Mike focuses on staying calm and balanced.
Turning Grief into Strength
Mike started running when he was 36 years old, during a very painful time in his life. He had just lost his first wife to a brain haemorrhage. To deal with his grief, he took up running. Mike once said:
“It was much better than the two martinis I used to have.”
That choice changed his life — and set him on the path to longevity and strength.
It’s Not Just About Genetics
Some people think long life comes from good genes, but Mike’s story tells a different tale. His father died of liver cancer at 69, and his mother passed away from a heart attack in her 70s. Mike believes his diet and fitness habits made the real difference in his journey to 102.
