The much-anticipated and revered Amarnath Yatra 2025 officially commenced with grandeur, faith, and high security as a total of 5,892 pilgrims set out on their spiritual journey to the Amarnath cave shrine, one of the most sacred destinations in Hinduism. The pilgrimage began from the Bhagwati Nagar base camp in Jammu, where an atmosphere filled with divine chants of “Bam Bam Bhole” and “Har Har Mahadev” echoed through the morning air. It was a scene charged with both spiritual energy and patriotic pride as these devotees, filled with unwavering devotion, stepped into a journey of a lifetime.
This annual pilgrimage is not just a ritual but a soul-stirring experience for countless devotees of Lord Shiva, as they venture to the ice Shiva Lingam located in a Himalayan cave in South Kashmir. This year’s yatra is being conducted amid heightened security arrangements, especially in light of recent threats and past attacks. However, despite the potential risks, the pilgrims remain fearless and determined, driven by their unshakable faith and protected by the tireless efforts of security forces.
Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha Performs Rituals and Flags Off First Convoy
The spiritual journey was flagged off with full ceremonial honor by Lieutenant Governor of Jammu and Kashmir, Manoj Sinha, who began the day by performing a puja at the Bhagwati Nagar base camp. Wearing a traditional Dogra turban and exuding humility and reverence, Sinha offered prayers for the successful and peaceful completion of the Yatra. His presence marked the deep commitment of the state administration toward ensuring both the spiritual and physical well-being of the pilgrims.
In a heartfelt gesture, LG Sinha waved to the convoy and personally interacted with several pilgrims before formally flagging off the first batch of vehicles. Sharing his sentiments on social media platform X, Sinha posted, “Flagged off first batch of pilgrims of Shri Amarnath Ji Yatra-2025 from Bhagwati Nagar Base Camp. Wishing all spiritual seekers a safe & comfortable journey to the holy abode of Lord Shiva and deeply soul-stirring experience. Prayed to Baba Amarnath for peace & blessings to all.” His message reflected the collective aspirations of a nation looking to preserve religious traditions in the face of adversity.
Thousands of Pilgrims Depart via Pahalgam and Baltal Routes
According to the official figures released from the base camp, a total of 310 vehicles transported the 5,892 pilgrims, who were divided into two groups based on the two traditional routes leading to the Amarnath cave—the Pahalgam route and the Baltal route.
The Pahalgam route, known for its longer and more scenic terrain, welcomed 3,403 pilgrims, which included 2,647 men, 467 women, 8 children, 16 transgenders, 200 sadhus, and 65 sadhvis. This path is preferred by those who wish to immerse themselves more deeply in the spiritual atmosphere and the natural beauty of the region.
Meanwhile, 2,489 pilgrims took the Baltal route, which is shorter but more physically demanding. This group included 1,748 men, 576 women, 23 children, 135 sadhus, and 7 sadhvis. Both routes converge at the sacred cave where the ice Shiva Lingam appears naturally each year.
Heightened Security in Wake of Pahalgam Attack
This year’s yatra is being conducted under extraordinary security measures, especially after the terrorist attack in Pahalgam on April 22, which had raised serious concerns. In response to such threats, the Central Government, under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, initiated Operation Sindoor, a high-level counter-terror initiative to ensure the safety of the devotees.
A staggering 581 companies of paramilitary forces have been deployed across Jammu and Kashmir for the duration of the yatra. Convoys are being escorted by armed CRPF vehicles equipped with automatic weapons, and the roads are being monitored using drones and CCTV surveillance. This visible and powerful display of national security has given a sense of confidence to the pilgrims.
Devotees March Fearlessly with Faith and Patriotism
Despite threats and recent attacks, the spirit of the pilgrims remains unshaken. Many devotees proudly declared their fearlessness, believing that Lord Shiva and the Indian Armed Forces are protecting them. Among them was Manoj Kumar, 37, from Sitapur, Uttar Pradesh, who said, “There is no fear among us. Bhole Ki Fauj, Karegi Mauj. The Pahalgam terror attack has failed to dampen our spirit.”
He also lauded the government’s tough response, stating, “PM Modi has given a strong reply to Pakistan through Operation Sindoor. Our security forces have been deployed for us. The enemies will not be able to cause any harm.” His sentiment was echoed by Ram Prasad, 51, from Azamgarh, who added, “This is the first day of the Yatra and you can see the excitement among devotees of Bhole Baba. The numbers will spiral alarmingly in the days to come.”
Another pilgrim, Ashish Kambli, 47, from Shirdi, who was undertaking his third Amarnath Yatra, shared his satisfaction with the current arrangements, saying, “The arrangements are much better this time. We faced no problems, and the administration is extending all possible help to us.”
Bhagwati Nagar Transforms into a Spiritual Hub
The Bhagwati Nagar base camp resembled a spiritual celebration with men, women, sadhus, and children gathering in large numbers, singing bhajans and chanting mantras. Conch shells were blown, and many lit incense sticks as they waited for the convoys to roll out. There was light drizzle in the air, but it only added to the emotional intensity of the moment. Devotees were seen dancing in celebration, wearing saffron-colored clothes, tilaks on their foreheads, and joy on their faces.
The presence of senior officers from the civil administration, J&K Police, paramilitary forces, religious heads, and Shri Amarnath Ji Shrine Board officials ensured that every aspect of the flag-off was well-coordinated. From food distribution to medical aid to vehicle checks, each detail was handled with precision.
Government and Shrine Board Commended for Arrangements
LG Manoj Sinha highlighted the collective efforts of various stakeholders in organizing this year’s pilgrimage. He said, “The administration, people of Jammu & Kashmir, Shri Amarnath Ji Shrine Board, J&K Police, and security forces have made elaborate arrangements for the pilgrims. Jammu city has come alive with a new vibrancy. The enthusiasm of pilgrims is very high. Undeterred by terror incidents, devotees of Bhole Baba are arriving in huge numbers, demonstrating their immense faith.”
These words of appreciation reflect the successful coordination and planning by various departments to facilitate the smooth conduct of the yatra. Facilities such as Langars (community kitchens), medical booths, oxygen centers, and rest stations have been set up along both routes. Regular weather updates, traffic alerts, and mobile health units are also available to ensure pilgrim safety and convenience.
The Significance of the Amarnath Yatra
The Amarnath Yatra is more than just a physical journey. It is a spiritual quest, a test of devotion, endurance, and inner awakening. The shrine, located at an altitude of 3,888 meters, houses the naturally formed ice Shiva Lingam, believed to appear each year as a manifestation of Lord Shiva’s divine presence. For devotees, visiting the Amarnath Cave is a life-changing experience that deepens their connection with the divine.
This pilgrimage, which dates back centuries, is deeply rooted in Indian culture and mythology. It is believed that Lord Shiva narrated the secret of immortality—the Amar Katha—to Goddess Parvati at this very location.
Yatra Numbers Expected to Surge in Coming Weeks
With the successful departure of the first batch, officials now expect a significant rise in pilgrim numbers in the coming days. The routes are being continuously monitored and upgraded to accommodate the increasing volume of travelers. Authorities are also emphasizing eco-friendly practices, encouraging pilgrims not to litter and to maintain the sanctity of the region.
The Yatra is scheduled to continue for several weeks, concluding on Shravan Purnima, which marks Raksha Bandhan. During this time, lakhs of pilgrims are expected to visit the cave and offer their prayers. As the Amarnath Yatra 2025 begins, it stands as a symbol of faith triumphing over fear and unity overpowering division. With meticulous planning, tight security, and undying devotion, this year’s pilgrimage is set to be one of the most historic and peaceful yatras in recent years.
